Why is my AC Running but Not Cooling?

If your HVAC unit is on but you notice your home’s temperature is going up or blowing out hot air, there are a few things that may be causing the problem. While mechanical issues will require an HVAC technician from McCoy’s, some of these solutions are DIY.

Check the thermostat and air filters

We know, we know, you’ve probably already done this – but check and make sure your thermostat is set to cool instead of heat or auto. Then, make sure the fan is turned on, or a constant setting. Check the air flow to see if it has improved. Similarly, if your air filter hasn’t been changed in a while, go ahead and replace it. If dirt builds up on the air filter, it can build up in the unit itself and cause long-term, pricey issues.

Look at the condenser unit

As we’ve mentioned before, most HVAC units have a fan that pulls air across coils to heat or cool your home. When cooling, the fan pulls hot air out of your home into the outdoor unit. See if you can locate and wipe away any debris on the coil using your vacuum’s brush attachment.

Do you see ice?

If you notice ice anywhere on your unit, but especially on the evaporator coil, it’s a sign to call a professional. Here are some quick steps to prevent and fix these issues.

Ultimately, there are several things that could be wrong with the HVAC unit. When in doubt, call your local HVAC technician to identify and repair the problem before it becomes worse.
